Where to Next? Stylish Hotels Worth the Stay

Nothing makes me happier than that magical place where design intersects with my sense of wanderlust. Beautiful things in beautiful places? Yes, please.

I don’t understand people who say, “It’s just a place to sleep.” For me, the hotel is an essential part of my travel experience, an opportunity to be immersed in and inspired by the location. And I want an unapologetic style.

Here are some design-driven hotels topping my travel wish list:

Hotel Brach in Madrid

Taking Spain in the 20s and 30s as his inspiration, Philippe Starck has created an entirely chic and art-forward destination in one of the most stylish European capitals. The building itself is rich in architectural history, and Starck’s vision for this luxe hotel is layered and dreamy. It is the perfect place to relax after a day of strolling and shopping on Madrid’s famous Calle Serrano.

Le Grand Mazarin in Paris

And while I’m in Europe, I’m also checking in at Le Grand Mazarin. Equally whimsical and refined, the interiors by Martin Brudnizki are inspired by the literary salons of grand houses of the aristocratic era. This is the spot for sipping a Kir Royale while reading Madame Bovary.

Proper Hotel in Santa Monica

I’m on a mission to stay at every Proper Hotel, and Santa Monica is next on the list. No one creates hip, organic interiors quite like icon Kelly Wearstler. I stayed at the Austin Proper and it felt like I was crashing at the house of a super cool friend. Santa Monica, I’m coming for you!

El Fenn in Morocco

An explosion of color and charm, El Fenn is perfectly located just outside Marrakech’s buzzy medina. Expect artisanal craftsmanship blended with a sense of the rich local heritage. Bring your camera—you will want to photograph everything.

OWO (The Old War Office) in London

In Paramount’s thrilling show The Agency, an impossibly glamorous Jodie Turner-Smith wafts through the halls of the OWO London, highlighting the point where British history meets high style. Make sure to book a tour to experience the history of the building for yourself, including Winston Churchill’s private rooms.

Britannic Explorer, A Belmond Train

Not technically a hotel, but this one is so irresistible I had to include it. Belmond’s Britannic Explorer channels the golden age of  train travel with luxurious flair. Picture martinis in Art Deco bar cars, and witty repartee, Orient Express style.

Rosewood in Sao Paulo

Sao Paulo is on fire right now! In fact, Travel and Leisure calls it Brazil’s most stylish city. That’s reason enough to visit, and when I do, I’ll be staying at Rosewood. With architecture by Jean Nouvel and interiors by Philippe Starck, it has a sexy, earthy vibe perfect for relaxation.

Aman in Kyoto

Aman hotels are the essence of refined luxury, and for many people they are destinations all on their own. Nestled in a forested garden just outside the city, Aman Kyoto is serene and powerfully elegant. This is one of the few hotels on this list that I’ve stayed in before, and I’m dreaming of going back.

For design lovers, travel is about more than the destination. It is also about how the experience of a place sparks inspiration and joy.

I would love to hear which places inspire you the most, so that I can add them to my list!
