I adore the idea of supporting talented women working today. Here are six female artists I am following right now.
1. Mary Long
Artist Mary Long’s encaustic (also known as hot wax painting) work is a favorite, and her colors are absolutely luminous. Space 2 from Owen Contemporary in Santa Fe is going to go in my new home office and will inspire the color palette.
2. Anna Mavromatis and Karin Broker
Houston artists Anna Mavromatis (Barbara Davis Gallery) and Karin Broker (McClain Gallery) both create incredibly beautiful and feminine pieces that speak to difficult themes of family, gender inequality and violence against women.
3. Julie Wolfe
Julie Wolfe’s pieces (Page Bond Gallery) are all about color and form. I’ve placed a couple of pieces with a client, but I am coveting them for myself. I wish she was still creating her small paintings on book pages — you want them by the dozen.
4. Mickalene Thomas
I’ve been following Mickalene Thomas’s work for a while. Her interior pieces make me think of Hockney’s photo collages mixed up with a Matisse painting. And the Lady Dior Bag she did — sigh.
5. Tammy Kanat
It’s almost impossible to buy one of Tammy Kanat’s pieces now, but they are the most incredible, textural things. She works in all kinds of different yarns on huge copper rings, and each piece is colorful and so rich.
